What is the best type of outdoor security lighting for a home?

February 3rd, 2010 | Posted in lighting   Comments Off
rob d asked:

We live close to a major road that gets quite a bit of foot traffic. Now we keep our property dark at night and have a motion detecting flood light. We’ve been told that the exterior should be illuminated. My concern is that if the house is lit up at night…things like patio furnature, bikes and skate boards will be visible…and therefore more of a target.

Thanks in advance for your help…Rob

Commercial Lighting Fixtures

December 14th, 2009 | Posted in lighting   Comments Off
Camille Howe asked:

Many companies act as a one-source online vendor for commercial lighting fixtures of every type and size. Companies can design their own commercial lighting systems through the companies online order process. Specialists are always on hand to answer questions about which lights work best in different building and outdoor areas. Their fixtures for commercial lighting can ship from the world’s top manufacturers and deliver both longer bulb life and reduced energy than older, outdated equipment and generic retail lights provide.

Most companies carry a widely diversified selection of emergency lighting fixtures for commercial and industrial use. Emergency lights can mean the difference between life and death in an industrial accident or major power failure. Most companies carry halogen; battery powered, and LED emergency commercial light fixtures that will ensure clear visibility of traffic areas, exits, and outdoor facilities regardless of weather conditions or municipal power fluctuations. They could also have single wall mount, single headed, and double headed emergency lights for different sized facilities and lighting level needs.

Most selections of indoor commercial lighting fixtures feature all major lighting types and offers industrial clients the ability to systematically light their indoor facilities room by room. They can have halogen commercial light fixtures and bulbs that add decorative touches to management offices and create lower lighting levels for guest areas. We have task lights for break rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Some companies carry both incandescent and fluorescent lights that are ideal sources of steady, cost effective illumination in storage and utility areas. For state of the art technology and maximum efficiency, consider indoor LED lights that offer cool burning temperatures at only 20 percent of the power required by other types of lighting. Average LED lights last for 30,000 bulb hours and require no maintenance and very rare replacements.

Outdoor facilities, parking lots, and docks all require bright light and maximum power conservation. Some companies carry the full spectrum of parking lot lights and commercial fixtures for exterior building and perimeter security lighting. Night crews and security personnel will see more clearly at night with our glare free parking lot lights that sit on any number of pole heights to evenly distribute illumination in a way that eliminates pockets of shadow but avoids reflecting glare from equipment and windows. Facilities can beef up parking lot security even further by adding floodlights along the perimeter. Commercial flood light fixtures can operate either on motion sensors or automated timers, allowing owners to keep some of the lights on from sundown to sunup and keep others in reserve for additional lighting as an intruder alert system.

Companies can also improve the security of buildings themselves with wall packs. Wall packs are exterior commercial lighting fixtures that attach directly to the structure of an office, factory, or warehouse itself. These lights maintain an even distribution of light around the building and any walkways or access points around doors or windows and offer a very strong deterrent to break-ins and vandalism. Lighting specialists can help companies select the specific models, luminosities, and sizes that work best with building architecture and provide optimal lighting for security cameras and on-site security personnel.

For construction companies and maintenance crews on the move we have a variety of Worklights that produce equivalent output to fixed commercial lighting fixtures. Worklights prove ideal for underground operations, street work at night, and portable safety for delivery drivers who may have to perform emergency maintenance on overnight long hauls.

Track Light Fixtures

December 2nd, 2009 | Posted in lighting   Comments Off
Peter Gitundu asked:

Many people consider the selection and installation of track light fixtures a challenge. This is so when you don’t have the technical knowledge and you are new to how an electrical system works. During the installation, the fixtures are attached to tracks and this is where the difficulty arises since some manufacturers do not make standard systems. There are three main standards that need to be adhered to i.e. the Juno, the Lightolier and the Halo. With these in mind one should not find it difficult to fit the matching devices to the fixture from end to end.

If you find some track light fixtures that are not compatible with the above standards, beware of the store chain that sold it to you. You could be dealing with a fake product, a product that is void of the quality produced by this kind of illumination. Whether you do the installation yourself or you hire a professional one thing should be clear, that they should fit!

I wish at this point to give you some tips to consider while installing track light fixtures:

1) To create a perfect layout, use the connectors and the track lengths as they are intended.

2) When doing the installation you can either use a normal junction box with a power supply or you can pull a       regular power cord to the outlet.

3) While you may be able to do 1 and 2 yourself, considering a professional electrician to take care of the        wiring could be a wise idea.

4) There are two types of bulbs that will accompany your track illumination system depending on the diameter and    the brightness required i.e. flood lights and spot lights. You can thus illuminate large areas and small          specific locations by use of different combination of spots and floods.

All said and done, the end result will be dependent on your choice of the light fixtures and the type of the bulbs that you use.

Can I run conduit from a flood light receptacle?

November 25th, 2009 | Posted in lighting   Comments Off
MMike asked:

I want to put an extension ring on an outside floodlight receptacle which would give me a threaded knock out to run conduit. On the circuit would be the flood light, and 2 boxes (a pendant light on each box). Is this possible or even safe?

What kind of light bulbs turn off/on automatically?

November 23rd, 2009 | Posted in lighting   Comments Off
G.L.P. asked:

I pass a specific house in my neighborhood and on the porch they have a light (not like regular flood lights w/ sensors), but the actual porch light. When you ride by the house the light on the porch turns on. Does anybody know if it is some type of sensor light? I’ve seen flood lights that do this, but never a regular porch light.

Can anyone recommend a good solar powered flood light?

akamoonpie asked:

We need to brighten up the front of our house and want to use solar lighting, but most solar lights just give off that blue glow and not really alot of light. I’m willing to pay for good ones, just wondering if there are any good ones?

what do you know about solar powered flood lights?

November 16th, 2009 | Posted in lighting   Comments Off
anonomama asked:

I live in a dark area of town where there is no street lights. I have been wanting to get flood lights to illuminate the outside at night when we get home, so that we dont have to walk in the darkness to the house.
I saw these and was wondering if they were any good,

http://www.tvmarketplace.net/(hneerwf0gt3s5xq1gy1sqvym)/products/product.aspx?id=553&OVRAW=pen%20howl%20flood%20lights&OVKEY=flood%20light&OVMTC=advanced#Included

The only reason i am going for solar powered is because we are renting and there is no connection outside for a flood light where it is needed. The only out door lights we have is in the backyard, (on the rightside of the house), and the porch, (in the front). Neither illuminate an area where someone could easliy hide in the shadows.
