Wednesday, July 29th, 2009
John Vettori asked:

Generally people started investing on Landscape lighting or outdoor lighting for their sweet home to look more beautiful. Landscape lighting includes pathway lighting, up/down lighting, deck/step lighting and other accessories. If you got pool or yard you can imagine how beautiful it would be with those landscape lighting.

Under the category of landscape lighting or outdoor lighting there is variety of different kinds of lights. Basically a directional flood light or a well light may refer to outdoor lighting products. One of the great advantages of this type of light is that, both of these types of outdoor lighting products come with timers and motion sensors. Now you do not even have to flip a switch in order to light up or put off your outdoor lighting. Landscape lighting typically refers to more decorative lighting that may be used top showcase a poor or backyard or deck area. Landscape lighting is both beautiful and useful. Many people use landscape lighting to light up a certain area of the house.

Wiprolighting can help out you in choosing the perfect lights for your home. Generally outdoor lighting is more efficient then landscape lighting. Lights that are along the pathway of your house or a light at the end of driveway can be considering as outdoor light. It’s good to invest in outdoor lighting, because outdoor lighting makes your home safer and secure in many ways. Both outdoor lighting and landscape lighting are necessities that light up the outside of your home in a functional, warm glow.

I live in West Palm Beach and yes there are the chevy caprice’s jacked up with rims, but now they are driving the white caprice with the flood light and some have the middle trunk antenna. this is the most ghetto thing i’ve ever seen. these people actually think they look cool, but to most they look like super trash (fur coat but no house). this is basically like impersonating a cop. what if i’m in trouble and need help and i think they’re a cop? what do you guys think about this? Has anyone else seen this trend?

Lighting your Water Feature

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009
Danielle Dickinson asked:

Lighting your Water Feature

Since we spend many hours outdoors in summer it makes sense to use lighting in your garden. In the contemporary garden the use of lighting has become increasingly important where, when applied correctly, it has the ability to create a whole new world once night falls. Outdoor lighting can be used to new create new dimensions and dramatic effects anywhere in your garden. This is especially so when lighting is used to illuminate moving water, the resulting effect can be stunning. While recognising the need to apply lighting to their water feature, many people struggle with how to position the lighting. Take into consideration that when it comes to creating your night-time wonderland that less really is more! Creating a sense of theatre through creating silhouettes and shadows is preferable to indiscriminately flood lighting an area. Although there are no hard and fast rules to the application of lighting to your feature, here we will guide you through some important considerations.

Electricity Supply

Since you probably already have a pump installed it is likely that you already have an outdoor power-point. All submersible lighting is low voltage but you will still need somewhere to plug in your transformer. If you do not have an outdoor power source contact a suitably licensed electrician who is experienced with outdoor fittings.

Maintenance

Just as you need to change your light bulbs inside your home you will occasionally need to replace them in your garden. Make sure that your light fittings are easily accessible to ensure performing routine maintenance is as easy as possible.

Colour

White light is most effective with outdoor lighting. Although many coloured lenses are often available they have a tendency to look positively garish in a residential setting. White light is also brighter than coloured lenses and is effective in creating shadows and silhouettes. Coloured lenses are best left to large commercial fountains with vibrant water displays.

Submersible or Dry Mounted Lighting?

When deciding whether to install submersible or dry mounted lighting fixtures, it is important to consider your water quality. If your water is full of algae or muddy then the effect of lighting from inside the water will be lost and the state of your water will be on show.

Clear water can benefit significantly from submersible lighting. Many different effects can be achieved from lighting from within your feature. Lighting Effects Still Water

Often is it best to use light fixtures to illuminate surrounding plants and features rather than lighting up the water itself. Lighting from above angled down will create mirrored reflections on the water’s surface. The darker the water is the better this effect can be achieved.

Submersible lighting can also be used to create a soft glow across the surface of the water. This is very effective when water lilies are present on the water’s surface.

Fountains

To effectively light a fountain the light source must come from within the water angled up at the fountain. This way the light will catch the air bubbles caused by turbulent water making them glow.

Waterfalls

To achieve the best outcome when illuminating a waterfall the light source should be placed behind the waterfall, backlighting it. This creates an entire new look and a sense of drama for your waterfall as evening falls.

Alternatively you could achieve a lovely effect through non directional lighting. Washing a rocky waterfall with light, highlighting the surrounding rocks and plant life rather than the water also provides an excellent look.

Features

There are a few lighting options for features these include: Lighting the feature from above - this effect is best when lighting is placed in a nearby tree and is at least 3 meters high angled down at the feature, either in front or behind.

Backlighting the feature - this effect creates a silhouette of the feature and allows the feature to take on a whole new look at night.

Spotlighting the feature - one or two spotlights can be dry-mounted in front of the features and angled up effectively illuminating it. Underwater light fittings - Submersible light fixtures can be placed either in front or behind the feature (or both) to create a dramatic effect. This is especially so when the water has movement causing the light to ripple over the feature.

Water Walls

Where your water wall clings to the surface of the wall the best option here is to light from within the water. A submersible light angled at the wall here will create a mesmerising effect as it ripples on the water against the surface of the wall.

If your water projects out away from the wall backlighting the sheet of water provides a distinctive effect. Take Time to Experiment

Before racing out to purchase your lighting it is worth taking the time to test how various lighting techniques will look when applied to your garden. The best way to achieve this is to use a water-proof torch and experiment with it. Shine the torch from above, behind, in front and below the surface of the water until you get the effect you desire.

Tip

Avoid glare! Glare can be annoying when unaddressed. Take time to view your lighting set-up from all angles to ensure glare is minimised.

Solar Flood Lights – Provides Much-needed Illumination

Sunday, July 26th, 2009
Ernesto Maitim asked:

Solar outdoor lights are becoming more popular among home and property owners. Such gadgets that are considered standouts are the solar flood lights. A home owner usually utilizes lighting in order to provide more illumination to the landscape, especially during nighttime. Likewise, another concern when employing lights is to enhance security and safety around your property.

As conventional lighting that uses electricity can become a cause for you to pay higher utility bills, a good alternative are solar outdoor lighting. Sun powered products such as solar powered flood lights are quite easy for anyone to install given the simple and few parts that they have. Albeit, the latest in the solar technology as made the solar flood lights brighter and more efficient.

Flood lights can effectively provide better and more enhancing lighting. It is meant to highlight any garden feature or structure. Likewise, such lights can be depended on in providing sufficient illumination on the dart spots in your home exterior or garden.

For those who are skeptical when it comes to the quality as well as performance of the solar powered flood lights, it is known that the improvements in bulbs as well as solar lighting technologies have made great strides.

The fact is that many commercial and production firms who require lights on their surroundings especially during the nighttime are now using solar flood lighting.

Many of these firms not only want to save on utility expenses, and more so, they are concerned about the environment. Evidently the alternative form of energy that is solar is every environmentally friendly and does not produce and release harmful products such as carbon in the air.

Solar flood lights, indeed, can be provider of lights for aesthetic purposes. It can effectively accent any feature of the outside areas of a home property. But for many, the security that it gives is good enough reason for a home owner to install these outdoor solar lighting.

How do I install an exterior flood light fixture above my back door?

Sunday, July 19th, 2009
mmarkvan asked:

I want to install an exterior flood light fixture above my back door, but there is no existing wiring in that location. I can somewhat easily run a wire along two edges and down the side of the door without it looking bad.

I have 2 problems:

1. What is the best way to mount the flood light fixture on the stucco exterior above my back door? This fixture is designed to fit over an existing location with the typical mounting bracket.

2. How can I use an existing light switch inside, next to the door to operate the flood light? I have a dual lightswitch next to my back door. One switch operates the exterior light that is next to the back door. The other switch doesn’t do anything that I can find. I think it is inactive, if that is even possible or logical.

Commercial Lighting Applications For Warehouses

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009
Dominik Hussl asked:

When you set up warehouse lighting is a paramount piece of the puzzle. You want to use commercial lighting, which is designed to illuminate a large amount of space. Not only do you need to light the inside of your warehouse space, security lighting on the outside may also be necessary in order to ensure safety. When choosing commercial lighting for your space make sure you have a plan of action as to what you want to do. In order to run a warehouse you need proper lighting. You want to be able to clearly see your inventory and if you have a night crew or shipments that come in late in the evening good light is paramount. There are lots of different commercial lighting options. You have High Bay and Low Bay lights, Flood Light, and Wall Packs. Some come with different light bulbs, which give off varying degrees of bright light. For Example if you carry products that are different colors and it is important to be able to see the true color you will need to use metal halide bulbs on the other hand if you are looking for more of a workhorse then a high-pressure sodium bulb may be the way to go.

High Bay Lighting is specifically designed to illuminate areas with ceilings over 20 feet high. This type of lighting fixture is very efficient in large warehouses or manufacturing facilities. Once you have decided you need a High Bay Lighting fixture the next step is choosing the right light bulb for the type of warehouse you are running. Several types of light bulb are available for this type of fixture like a metal halide, high-pressure sodium, mercury vapor and fluorescent bulbs. Choosing the right light bulb very much depends on your needs. High Bay Lighting usually comes in two sizes, 16 or 22″. This type of fixture is designed to distribute light evenly over a large face therefore increasing productivity and safety in the area.

Low Bay Lighting fixtures are designed to be used in a commercial setting like a warehouse or manufacturing plant. Low Bay fixtures are designed to be used in facilities with lower ceiling heights. This fixture is designed to light larger areas with lower ceilings adequately enough for workers to be productive and to ensure safety. Low Bay lighting fixtures should only be used in spaces where the fixture is less then 20 feet above the floor. There are some light bulb choices for this type of fixture just like the High Bay’s. Typically a High Intensity Discharge Bulb is used in these. Flood Lights are generally a good idea for illuminating the outside of your warehouse. Areas like the parking lot, which need to be illuminated for security and safety reasons, are perfect candidates for flood lighting. Combine a Flood light with a light pole and you are all set to light up the outside of your warehouse.

Wall Packs are a great way to secure and illuminate the outside areas of your warehouse, especially the sides and back of the building. Wall Packs work great at illuminating the outside of a warehouse but for aesthetics its better to use floods to illuminate the front of your warehouse and to use wall packs for the sides and back areas. The most commonly used wall packs are 175-watt metal halide or 400 watt high-pressure sodium wall packs. However if you are in a state where dark sky regulations occur you will need to find zero site line wall pack in order to conform to regulations.

Commercial Grade Lighting System

Friday, July 10th, 2009
Kimberly Quang asked:

If you own a business, you will sooner or later need to update the way you light it. There are several reasons why you will need a new or updated commercial grade lighting system. One of the most important reasons is that older systems are much less energy efficient. You are wasting money every month in electric costs with older, inefficient lights. You also might note problems in some lights such as flickering or humming, or constantly needing to replace the bulbs. There are many applications for commercial grade lighting systems. You might need interior lamps, security lights, or exterior lights for a parking lot or open space. All of these require a different type of lamp and possibly different bulbs in those lights. General advice and tips can help you to narrow down your many options. Once you have fine-tuned your choices, you can ask an expert if you have specific questions about your project.

If you have a commercial grade lighting system that is ten years old or more, it will be time for more modern replacements. Today’s parking lot lights are able to light larger areas, have truer coloring, and lack flickering and humming seen in older models. The most common commercial grade lighting systems several years ago used incandescent and commercial fluorescent lights for indoor lighting. Incandescent are not very energy efficient, since much of the energy they require ends up generating heat. Fluorescents and their fixtures of decades gone by were one of the few options. While they were more efficient, they would often flicker and hum, and everything under them often had a yellowish hue. The flickering and humming have been solved by modern fixtures with newer magnetic and electronic ballasts to control the electricity going to the lights better. Today’s fluorescents also have a different mixture of gases in them, so their coloring now is truer.

Security lights for your commercial grade lighting system will likely be tied into a motion detector. This will save energy costs by only turning the lights on when they are needed. A bright security flood light with a motion detector is a good way to deter criminal activity in and around your business at night. You should choose long-lived halogens or cool fluorescents for motion activated flood lights. If your flood lights are going to be lit all night long, such as for a parking lot, then you also have the option of high intensity discharge (HID) bulbs such as high pressure sodium, mercury vapor, and metal halide bulbs. These can be wired to a timer or light sensor to turn on at dusk and off at dawn, but since they take a few seconds to warm up before lighting, they should not be used with motion detectors.

If you are still uncertain about any aspect of choosing or installing your commercial grade lighting system, you will need to consult with an expert. A professional electrician can be hired to do the job as a contract worker, or you could talk to the experts at the lighting products retailer. Many reputable light stores are staffed by current and former electricians. These people can help to guide you to choosing the right lights and hardware if you want to install your commercial grade lighting system on your own.
