Hot Water Heater Pilot light is out after flood. What do I do?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
C. A asked:

I recently had a flood in my basement of about 6 inches of water. The Hot water heater is not on anymore. it looks as if the pilot light is out. The label on the side said not to try to ingnite it if it has been submerged in water. What should I do, can I relight it myself, or do I have to get it repaired or buy a new heater?

Advances In Solar Lighting Technology

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
Jonathan Gal asked:

When some consumers hear the words “solar light fixture” they may automatically assume that this will be a relatively low-light emitting item not meant to do more than cast rays in a feeble radius. That is not an accurate perception of such handy and earth-friendly fixtures any longer.

Thanks to advances in solar cell technology, LED lighting and rechargeable batteries, today’s solar lighting fixtures are almost comparable to the quality and illumination of traditional, “hard wired”, settings. In fact, many people prefer the luminosity of LED bulbs more than the glaring light of traditional bulbs, and no one can deny the importance of installing lights that require no electrical source in order to operate.

Aren’t solar lights just those small path lights or single lights that people install in areas without electricity? Actually, today home and business owners can find powerful spot and flood lights that operate strictly on solar energy. These lighting fixtures can be quickly installed and used to illuminate flag poles, signage, store fronts or even create an effective form of security around a property. The great thing about these fixtures is that they do not require any professional services to install. An owner simply drives the fixture’s stake into the soil or attaches it with the included hardware and places the solar panel in an area that delivers adequate sunlight, and that is it!

Of course some of these lights are triggered by motion and will serve in the exact same capacity as their electricity-consuming cousins. What all of these features really add up to is a lot of savings in time and money. The owner does the installation themselves in a matter of minutes and it will cost only pennies over the course of many years to maintain the lights. A good solar motion detector can be a cheap, practical way to add security to any home.

There are also many fixtures that are perfect for yards and gardens, and these too are outfitted with the latest technologies, including dusk to dawn sensors, adjustable lamps, motion detectors and materials suitable for year-round installation. For example, there are lamp posts, pathway lights and porch and patio fixtures that deliver illumination equal to hard wired fixtures, but which never demand the type of professional installation or maintenance that they do.

Finally, it is important to point out one advantage that most solar outdoor lighting fixtures have over traditional lights and that is that they are usually self-contained. Unlike traditional fixtures that can have cords deteriorate or which might fall victim to animals and vermin, solar lights have few vulnerabilities and are less likely to succumb to many environmental factors.

Flood light bulb blew- regular okay for now?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
Lady in Pink asked:

My recessed indoor flood light bulb (65watt 130volt) blew… its 8pm and I am not running to the store. I NEED a light there because I need to study tonight & cannot use the regular lights.

Is it okay to use a regular 60watt light bulb there? Will it get too hot in the recessed area and melt something because the light isn’t being reflected back down?

Things to Look For in Parking Lot Lighting Fixtures

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
R. Neal asked:

Parking lot fixture design and manufacture are both very important. Take for example the wide variety of parking lot fixtures that are used to light car dealerships. It is not uncommon to find a diversity of fixture types illuminating vehicles, buildings, and driveway entrances at night. Shoebox fixtures are frequently used as cost savers for dealerships located in coastal areas prone to tropical storms and occasional hurricanes. By fitting a more aerodynamically designed fixture to the top of a light pole, it is often possible to use smaller, less expensive poles to achieve optimal results on a car lot.

This is only one example of how choosing the right parking lot lighting fixtures can play a pivotal role in developing a proposal that exceeds client expectations without exceeding the limits of their budget. The point is not to lock yourself into any one set of preconceptions about which light fixtures will work best in your client’s parking lot until after you have looked at all the other mitigating factors that go into planning and developing a parking lot lighting design.

For instance, if you are lighting a small retail parking lot with a restaurant drive through or an outdoor coffeehouse patio, could it not be just as effective to use a wall-mounted fixture rather than a pole mounted fixture? Many such fixtures not only can add a historical or contemporary decorative element to the walls surrounding a parking lot, but such lights can often house more energy efficient types of lamp that emit a higher level of luminance than your client has had in the past with a significant decrease in electrical usage. In many communities, actual fixture type is dictated by decorative concerns such as those commonly found in homeowners restrictions and historical portions of town. Lighting a parking lot with combination wall mounted and pole mounted fixtures can often fulfill both luminary and regulatory requirements simultaneously.

Of course, any parking lot, large or small, must be lit with security as well as visibility foremost in mind. Any number of flood light fixture types can be used to secure the perimeter of a parking lot by eliminating shadows along walls, behind buildings, and in gaps between storefronts. This may create a challenge for some contractors working in a community with stringent light pollution controls in place. Illuminating your client’s 5,000 square feet of pavement may require using 1,000W Metal Halide Lamps to light the perimeter and entryways and distribute light out and across the pavement. However, if dark sky laws mandate strict light spillage containment, you will need to house these lamps in a variety of housing design options ranging from full to semi-cutoff luminaire build. Otherwise, the light will go into neighboring residences and businesses, or even into the eyes of passing motorists.

In many instances, the degree of cutoff evident in a parking lot light fixture can be coupled with a specific optics type that further allows for energy-savings and lighting regulation compliance. For example, it may not be necessary after all to use floodlights that are all rated at 1000W. You may only need to selectively one or two 1000W, then use lower 400W fixtures arranged at specific angles of lighting incidence to create the desired foot candle plots needed in parking areas, store fronts, and delivery zones.

Calculating how to create this type of “less is more” lot lighting design using fixtures combined with optics, lighting angles, pole heights, and a diversity of mounting options is a task you can assign to an RLLD Commercial Lighting specialist. Using AGi32, our team can create multiple three-dimensional models that will show both you and your client different options to choose from and provide a more streamlined approach to developing a final equipment list that best fits everyone’s budget.

Why won’t my flood lights work?

Thursday, August 13th, 2009
gsmanning asked:

I installed a new motion sensor flood light on my house, replacing the old one that was broken, but it won’t work. All wires are connected the same way as the original. White to white, black to black, and ground to house ground. It just won’t turn on for some reason. I took it back and got another, but the same problem exists. What could it be?
I tried adjusting the sensitivity and used it in test mode as directed in the installation instructions. It still won’t turn on.

Solar Security Lights – How Business Owners Can Save Money And Provide Security

Thursday, August 13th, 2009
Jonathan Gal asked:

Modern business owners have a lot of security issues to address. They must ensure that their company’s computers are as secure as possible, they must create a daytime security system that protects their employees and any merchandise and they must keep up security after business hours have ended and all through the night.

Night time security measures often include burglar alarms, security cameras and strategically placed lighting. All of this adds up to costly electricity bills and the potential for some major problems if the electricity should fail. Are there any solutions for business owners looking to enhance or upgrade their night time security? Yes, and it’s solar lighting.

Solar security lighting has advanced to an amazing degree, and there are an incredible number of attractive, durable and effective solar lighting units available. Today’s business owners can make their property more appealing through the installation of the lights, but they can also add an enormous amount of security from them as well.

How is that? Most thieves and burglars prefer to remain hidden or under cover. During the evening hours this is quite simple, unless an area is flooded in light. Today’s solar fixtures can provide a remarkable range of preventative lighting options. For instance, there are high powered spot lights that can be adjusted to flood any shrub, corner or doorway with a brilliant beam of light. There are also many path and sidewalk lights with built in spotlights as well. These can be set along a sidewalk with the spotlight pointed at a doorway or area of possible cover.

Additionally, there are many high powered motion sensor lights that can be mounted along roof lines or entry areas and these too will chase away would-be thieves from loading areas, cargo docks and rear entries that are often unseen by law enforcement or passersby on the street.

The benefits of using solar lighting options for a business include the low cost for installation as they require no professional electrical services, most are outfitted with long-lasting and extra bright LED bulbs that require little maintenance or replacement, and the fact that they can be placed almost anywhere and receive their power supply from their collectors which can be mounted at great distances from the actual lighting fixtures.

Clearly, it really pays to investigate options in  solar flood lights for the exterior of a business. They can greatly enhance any existing security measures and also serve as a strong defense against would-be thieves who approach the business under cover of darkness even when the power is out.

Small Bathroom Lighting

Sunday, August 9th, 2009
Anna Hart asked:

Small bathrooms might be those added under a stairway or in a spare closet. They might be for children, adults, or both. A small bathroom might be a guest powder room off the foyer or living room. One thing they have in common is that they are - small. Another thing they have in common is that they call for special lighting.

Small bathroom lighting is dependent, in part, on the use of the bathroom. One type of bathroom light fixture might convey a warm, cozy feeling for dinner guests. Another type of bathroom light fixture might make the small bathroom seem spacious - or provide light for reading while relaxing in a deep soak tub.

Warm and Cozy Lighting

You can make a small bathroom feel warm and cozy rather than claustrophobic by adding the right light fixtures. Suppose this is a small half-bath meant primarily for guests to “freshen up” before dinner. You’ve used small-patterned deep red and gold wallpaper for warmth. What kind of light fixtures should this small bathroom have?

Try recessed, can ceiling light fixtures focused on work areas. Or use indirect lighting around the perimeter of the ceiling-wall junction. On either side of the mirror above the sink, add a wall sconce light fixture. Avoid large wall sconces, or those that protrude too far from the wall, as they will make the room look cluttered. Layering these two types of light fixture will give you warm, gracious lighting in a small bathroom for guests.

Bright Enough for Reading

If the small bathroom in your home has a soaking tub, or one used by children, you will want good lighting in the tub area. Most lighting above tubs and showers is diffuse lighting, which is fine for a quick shower or bath. Diffuse lighting is also good over-all lighting to soften the entire bathroom. However, if you want to read - or get paint off of a child - you may want brighter, more concentrated lighting. Use a focused flood or halogen light fixture on the wall above the tub.

Choose safe, moisture proof light fixtures for this area. “Make sure that your lamps are UL rated for damp locations insuring safety,” says Todd Phillips, president of lighting manufacturer Quoizel.

Space Enlarging Lighting

You can never have too much light in a small bathroom, as long as you use it properly. Perhaps the best idea for small bathrooms is to begin with indirect lighting around the ceiling for overall softness and warmness. Then consider these possibilities.

1. If your small bathroom has a window, use light-admitting, sheer curtains at the window. Add a shade that can be drawn for privacy.

2. Light shower or tub with separate wet area light fixtures, strong enough to permit easy personal grooming, but with dimmer switches for atmosphere.

3. On either side of the vanity mirror, use warm fluorescent vertical wall sconces to provide even facial illumination. Place a halogen light above the mirror for cross illumination. Place these mirror surrounding light fixtures on a separate switch.

4. Run a linear light fixture along the vanity toe-space to provide a soft night light.

5. For a family use small bathroom, place a halogen or flood light near the toilet, focused as a good reading light. Install a separate switch.

With all of these light fixtures layered in a small bathroom, you will always have exactly the amount of light you need for any given task. Yet you can make it cozy with dimmer switches, safe with night lights.

Helpful Tip

Small bathroom lighting need not be garish or insufficient. You can have plenty of light or cozy lighting if you layer your light, and control it with separate and/or dimmer switches.

Solar Lighting Solutions For Horse Arenas

Sunday, August 9th, 2009
Jonathan Gal asked:

If you are an enthusiastic horseback rider you will probably dream about an arena of your own. Quite often horse owners have the land and even an established arena area, but cannot afford to equip it for day and night use. Luckily there are great answers with solar lighting.

Traditionally, the most expensive part of creating an outdoor riding arena is the lighting and electrical requirements that adequate fixtures demand. For example, most arenas will put to use several pole mounted fixtures in addition to an array of locally placed lights. Remember that horses are easily spooked by shadows and an arena needs to be literally flooded with light to keep horses calm and riders safe. This also means a lot of lighting and a lot of electricity, but not for those with solar lights!

Currently there are super bright fixtures capable of broadcasting light in a twenty-foot radius. These units can be mounted to the sides of buildings, set on posts or even placed on the ground. This translates to a comprehensive approach to flooding an arena with low-cost, LED solar lighting fixtures. An outdoor arena owner could simply install the units and begin their night time riding.

Many of the best solar spot lights also come equipped with on and off switches and even remote control handsets. This means that even though a nine or ten hour supply of electricity is available through the collector, the lights will only operate when the owner needs them to.

Additionally, many solar flood lights are equipped with an adjustable number of LED bulbs. These long-lasting and durable lights are known for their ability to function at low-temperatures while providing incredible illumination, and many solar spots intended to be used in outdoor arenas come with up to five LED bulbs in each fixture. These fixtures, however, can have their brilliance reduced by the built in bulb controls that reduce LED usage from the maximum five to a two or three light usage.

So, for the cost of the equipment, an outdoor arena can be fully illuminated - this means no additional power panels added to a home or barn, no expensive service from a licensed professional, no time wasted in replacing bulbs over and over, no monthly electrical bills, it may mean no permits will have to be acquired and it definitely means no need to miss a ride if there is a problem with the electricity!
