Bathroom Lighting for Making you Spend Hours in your Bathroom

Saturday, October 31st, 2009
Foryourhome asked:

It has been found out that we humans spend about 25-30% (it could be more for all those beautiful women’s out there) of our life inside the bathroom. Just like the rest of the house, nowadays bathroom too reflects individual’s changing lifestyles. More spacious multi functional and cozier, these once functional quick in and out place have become glamour havens — private corners designed for relaxation, escape and self-indulgence.. Good bathroom lighting is important for you so whether you are putting on makeup or combing your hair, you need a positive view of yourselves, which can only be accomplished by using the right lighting shades and fixtures. The bathroom is the part of the house with the densest assortment of materials and finishes with wall tile, floor tile, shower tile, faucet hardware, towel bars, large mirrors, bathtubs, shower fixtures, etc all in a space often smaller as compare to other parts of the house.

However before going further in designing your bathroom lightings, few precautions or guidelines are necessary. IEEE (An international electrical standards body) recommends some bathroom lighting guidelines which we will discuss here. Firstly it is important to understand the rating by which bathroom are classified. IP rating stands for ‘Ingress Protection’ and is always followed by two characters. These two numbers refer to level of protection and it is important that you choose bathroom light fittings with the correct rating according to where they are to be sited within the bathroom. Lighting inside the bath or shower itself must be low voltage, (max 12v) and be rated at least IP60 which is total immersion proof. Area above and around the bathtub, shower corner, wash basin or any other water using space to a height of 2.25m from the floor, a minimum rating of IP44 is required. If the fitting is 240v which is common for UK homes, a 30ma residual current device (RCD) must also be used to protect the circuit in this zone. Lastly other area of the bathrooms which is in no contact with water, generally no IP rating is required.

In bathrooms, it is quite important to provide adequate light around the vanity and other practical areas like mirrors. While lighting your bathroom, avoid excessive illumination and use your judgment depending upon the size of your bathroom. The general thumb rule is to go on the basis of task lighting or with the lights that do the most work. Like for mirrors, use one for each, then for showers corners, toilet and the rest for proper illumination of the whole bathroom. If possible use switchers or regulators to control any excessive lights depending upon the mood needed and natural light conditions. When illuminating the whole bathroom, always go for a combination of recessed halogen flood lights with other forms of lights to give proper illumination. Using just halogen flood lights can lead to scary shadowing effects and thus other lightings like Bathroom Wall mounted lights in their variety of sizes and shades are useful. Bathroom ceiling fixtures is also another option to give needed illumination. A decorative light fixture suspended from the ceiling provides an elegant touch while adding extra light. Shower lights can or bathroom wall mounted lights with IP64 can brighten up enclosed corners. It should be bright enough to help avoid spills while making washing and shampooing yourself easier. If you have tubs, then like showers, need good general light, which can be provided by a recessed fixture. To avoid dull lights, focus the light’s beam at the outside edge of the tub. Reading lamps by the toilet provide more focused light if you want one. Good bathroom mirror lighting, like that provided by warm fluorescent vertical wall sconces or bars, will provide the even facial illumination necessary for eliminating dark circles and shadows. Choose mirror lights to give a proper, with glare and shadow image of yours since you have a practical job to do, grooming and looking your best. If needed, use single sconces on either side of the mirror to remove shadow on your face.

Bulb selection is as important as choosing and placing the right fixture. For lighting vanity areas, try colored or low coated bulbs designed to enhance facial features. Look for wall mounted fixtures that beam down so the heat dissipates easier from the sockets and creates a longer life for all bulbs. In general, fluorescent is not a best choice; it tends to make people colourise. Instead try incandescent bulbs, or bulbs that advertise their similarity to daylight. Remember that the wrong bulb can make anyone look terrible. In all, use energy efficient lights bulbs which are good to look and ease on energy savings. Also keep some spare one for emergency cases. Also, fixtures should be easy enough to maintain and should be guaranteed. Before installing them permanently, hold them up to daylight and be certain you like what you see.

Thus with proper bathroom lighting plan and inspiration to spend quality time out in your bathroom, lighting it will be a just a click of a button.

How to Prepare a Good Recipe for your Kitchen Lighting Needs

Sunday, October 25th, 2009
Foryourhome asked:

The scale of activity that takes place in the kitchen makes it an important place where use of effective practical and also decorative lighting is a must. Some things to look at;

Some questions to ask before you start lighting your kitchen

First and foremost question you need to ask while design your kitchen lighting is how much you are ready to spend. After all the light fixtures do cost something – and this are not only the wires and switches but also the type of light fixtures, shades and bulbs. Next question that should come in your mind is whether you have a kitchen lighting plan. A good plan will surely blend lighting into the architectural and decorative details of the room. A plan will help you out it investing wisely into kitchen lighting needs. If you want to go for a gradual lighting design process seeing you don’t have enough budget say for example for a series of pendants over the center island or a glass chandelier at least install enough junction boxes The fixtures can then be purchased at a later date and easily added to the kitchen lighting needs. After determining the budget and a plan, you need to think about the space area of your kitchen. This is important in determining the amount of lighting required and in which areas of the kitchen need specific lighting. One also needs to consider whether the room apart from needing single central light, how many other multiple lighting options may be needed. This is determined by the area or space of the room, all the activities that are place in the kitchen and are important, as well as the placement of all interior objects such as the cooking range, counter top and the kitchen-cum-dining table if present. For example, small kitchens may require only a central ceiling pendant light and some recessed task lighting tucked under a cabinet. More elaborate kitchens will demand a blend of general, task and accent lighting.

Know the types of Kitchen lighting

Lighting a kitchen is a different ball game compare to lighting other rooms in your house since no single light source can provide all the necessary kitchen lighting needs. It is very important to know that good kitchen lighting is not only considered from an aesthetic standpoint, but also from a functional standpoint. This will allow us to make sure that we incorporate different types of lighting and nowadays techno paced LED lights to fulfill the various levels of Kitchen activities. This is commonly referred to as layering of lights which instead of single lighting, demands a blend of three to four varied types of lighting. To meet these demand of layered lighting, there are basically four types of lighting that meet up the mark;

Task Lighting or Chore Lighting: It illuminates the most functional and practical part of your kitchen by providing adequate lighting for kitchen core tasks like chopping vegetables, cooking food and yes, reading recipes. Most of the accidents which occur in kitchen are mostly due to this tasks and proper task lighting design can really prevent them. Task areas should have sufficient light so you can easily see what you’re working on without too much brightness or eye-straining dimness. The main thing to remember here is most of the time task lighting instead of brightening up a task area, shadows it. For this to not take place, task lights is best placed between the actual work place and your head which makes lighting located say below the upper cabinets very helpful. For example, task lighting is placed over the sink, gas cooker and food preparation area, where close work is done regularly. Most of task lighting is achieved by using conventional recessed lights that assure even illumination, surface lights or table tops lights. Remember that each task lights if possible should have its own switch and honestly you will be pleased with the result. Considering the types of bulbs for task lighting then halogen and CFL (in energy efficient bulbs category) being bright and shadow less with large surface area are best to go for. It electrifies the look of granite and marble countertops and it even let you enjoy your food cooking task, seriously.

Ambient or Glow or Indirect Lighting: This type of lighting lends a pleasant glow to your kitchen, thus giving a warm welcome to the people entering into the kitchen. It plays a major role in softening unwanted shadows, reducing kitchen room contrast and lighting vertical surfaces to give the space a brighter feel. It is generally observed that out of the four types of lighting, ambient is most often overlooked. In fact, the most dramatic and soft look you can achieve in a kitchen is by blending indirect lighting with other types of lighting. It is often created by hiding the light source from view where it bounces off a ceiling or a wall and produces a warm glow that adds enormous amounts of ambiance if done correctly. Best places for ambient lights can be hidden on top of wall cabinets if the ceiling is bit high or they can be installed in layered ceiling areas that surround the entire kitchen space. In case your kitchen has light colored surfaces and lots of windows then you can desire to have plenty of natural ambient light during the day. CFL based lights tubes (light link) are well suited to the job of providing ambient light.

Accent or Prominent lighting: This type of lighting gives a depth and dimension to your kitchen. It helps you to display your most decorative items in your kitchen like a fancy glassware or tableware, stylish luxury cutlery sets, beautiful canvas art prints or may be your nicely prepared food. For example lighting fixtures can be placed inside glass-front cabinets to illuminate glassware, and other collections as well as recessed, adjustable low-voltage fixtures used to spotlight canvas art prints. You can put to use spotlights to illuminate your cooked food which will also help it remain hot for longer period of time.

Decorative or ornamental lighting: This type of lighting is basically used for adding sparkling effects to the kitchen that can be envious to your neighbours. It can be further helpful to look at this type of lighting especially if kitchen is also used as the dining area of the house. Nowadays due to wide range of lights available, you can opt for decorative lights which can be functional also. For example, many functional lighting fixtures come in a number of finishes like wrought iron, rust, nickel which will provides an aesthetic feel to your kitchen. Painted finishes are also popular along with catchy colored glass bypasses plain white. You can also consider a decorative fixture with three or more lights. Like a trio over an island provides good light since it breaks up the kitchen into decorative module areas but you can still see through it. Some other decorative lighting ideas could be like dinner table space is illuminated with a decorative candelabra-style fixture, which provides ambient light during meals.

Finally some tips and common mistakes to avoid

No matter how many lights you install in your kitchen, it is recommended to circuit them separately so the lighting is zoned. This allows you to create ambiance by mixing the various lights which is turned on.

If possible even while you shop online, take a picture of your kitchen or at least know your kitchen dimensions. How tall is the ceiling? How much space is there between the cabinets and the ceiling? How much space is there between the cabinets and the countertop? To make sure you cook up the best lighting scheme for your kitchen, use some free advice from light shop professional. The best thing is to do some window shopping before the actual purchase.

You might have found the perfect light fixture, but we can’t forget the equally important light bulbs. To make the most of your lighting, try using bulbs with different beam spreads for different effects. Flood lights are great for creating widespread lighting like a on central ceiling, while spotlights are ideal for shedding light on specific areas like for accent lighting.

No matter how many types of lighting or fixtures you install, use lights of the same color for all the kitchen lighting

If you are spending the money on nice cabinets or a dinner table in the kitchen, for example, you want to make sure they are lit properly. If not, the light actually creates gray shadow areas. If you have deep cabinets in dark corners, you might even want to consider installing lights inside them so you can see what’s hiding in the back

When it comes to kitchen lighting, the most common mistake is trying to light the entire room with one ceiling-mounted light fixture. The result ends up visually overpowering everything in the kitchen space. Recessed lighting, if installed in a generic grid, isn’t much better. A lot of people do it incorrectly, and they’ll end up with too much light in some areas and shadows everywhere else

On the other end, another common mistake we all do is over-lighting and result is, the kitchen gets too hot. The goal here is to have moderate, even lighting and more importantly blends of different lightings. For example, you just can’t keep on adding recessed lights for the sake of visual look, instead of mixing various lighting types.

We at For your home in trying to make your better homes gardens really hope the above provided information will help you to make a sound decision on your kitchen lighting design and let you enjoy your food more. So when are you inviting us over a meal!!

Are there any energy efficient light bulbs that don’t take a few minutes to light up?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
OZ2003 asked:

Recently I have begun to change out my standard light bulbs with the energy efficient ones. The new flood light ones are great! Anyways, as you know, you turn on the switch, and usually the lights start off dim, and about 15 seconds later you have full brightness.

I would like to do our bathroom but wonder if anyone has seen a bulb that is energy efficient that turns on immediately at full power?

Commercial Lighting Products

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009
Kimberly Quang asked:

When you have a business, lighting it is a very important aspect of its operation. Lights fulfill so many tasks in the workplace. They provide lighting under which your employees will work, they offer security at night both inside and outside the building, and they can even light a parking lot. There are dozens of different types of commercial lighting products from which to choose. Knowing what your specific job is, and for what you need the light will help to narrow down your choices. In order to install your lights, you will need to have the right hardware and lighting accessories. Your options for these commercial lighting products can help you to save time and money both in installation and operation. If you are unsure of what exactly you need, consult with an expert to get advice and guidance for your project.

Lighting the interior of your business will affect the productivity of your employees. They will not be able to work as efficiently if they are under lights which are too dim. Depending upon the job that they have to do, this could result in problems with the finished product. That is why you will need to find commercial fluorescent lighting products that will brightly illuminate your employees’ working area. The lights you choose will be based upon the size of the area to be lit. If you have a large warehouse with high ceilings over twenty feet, you will need high bay lighting, but if the ceiling is lower than twenty feet, choose low bay lamps. If you have office space, rather than having industrial grade bay lamps, you will likely want the more common fluorescent fixtures. Whatever commercial lighting products you decide upon, make sure that they are durable enough for your business environment. Bay lights and fluorescent fixtures also should have easy access to the low pressure sodium bulbs and ballasts for quick future repairs and replacements. You will have to undergo fewer of these, if you choose long-lived energy efficient light bulbs to go with your commercial lighting products. These will be both bright and cheap to operate.

The exterior of your business will also benefit from commercial sign lighting products. You might want flood lights tied in with either a timer or motion detector for security reasons. Parking lot light poles with lamps also add to the safety of your company. For outdoor lighting, HID lamps, fluorescents, incandescents, and halogens are all viable bulb options, but you will need to keep in mind that all of these, except incandescents, do not operate well in sub-zero temperatures. If you live in a climate that is prone to winter freezes, you will need to get a special ballast to allow your lights to continue to operate, even on the harshest of winter days. Exterior security flood lights will need to be very bright in order to banish shadows where criminals could conceal their activities.

That brightness, however, should not cost you more money. You can find energy efficient light bulbs & lamps to achieve both the brightness you need at the cost savings that you desire. There are many different types of these commercial lighting products designed to save on running costs. If long life and brightness are important to you, halogens are a good choice for your fixtures. These are incandescent lights with an additive in the bulb which regenerates the filament each time it is lit. This means that they will not burn out as quickly as traditional incandescents. The only caveat to these lights is the fact that they create a large amount of heat. If temperature control is important to your workspace, you will probably want to choose something besides a halogen bulb.

Wall Mounted Lighting Fixtures. Commercial Area, Security, Accent

Friday, October 2nd, 2009
R. Neal asked:

Wall mounted lights perform three important functions integral to effective outdoor commercial lighting. First, they create general lighting for pedestrian around buildings and outdoor structures. General lighting should provide enough visibility to allow people to clearly differentiate between objects and judge distances accurately. Wall mounted lighting also plays a major role in accent lighting. Since many wall mounted fixtures feature highly geometric and decorative designs, they contribute very well to the overall aesthetic of almost any building. Security lighting, although most frequently done with landscape floodlights, also depends to some extend on wall mounted fixtures. Wall mounted flood lights on the corners and sides of large buildings can create a significant deterrent to criminal mischief by keeping main access points clearly visible to security personnel and cameras at all times.

When balanced in the right proportions, these three aspects of wall mounted lighting will work together to create a perimeter of illumination around any structure that creates a safer environment and a better overall aesthetic for the grounds.

General Lighting Fixtures

A Spartan approach is the best approach when it comes to installing wall mounted luminaires for general lighting. Contrary to popular misconception, the human eye does not need a great deal of light to see clearly at night. Scientific studies have proven that actual levels of light are far less important than the ability to see basic shapes, differentiate between objects and shadows, and to judge distance accurately.

Basic fluorescent wall packs are generally all that is required to create an even, glare free field of illumination around most buildings. Fluorescent wall mounted lighting offers several cost effective advantages over incandescent and halogen light fixtures. Fluorescents will last much longer and do not need to be replaced nearly as frequently. They also use far less power and can be left on throughout the night at significantly lower costs to your client’s overall operating budget.

Accent Lighting Fixture

Square and round brick and step lights are ideal luminaires to brighten up stairways and walls around outdoor courtyards and building entrances. Directional accent lights with highly decorative fixture designs are also available when specific lighting effects are desired, or when precise lighting levels around certain structures are necessary. RLLD Commercial Lighting provides a wide selection of square and round wall mounted lights that make an excellent compliment to landscape and path lighting around public facilities, schools, churches, and civic center.

When more intense levels of light are called for, you may need to use larger, more robust fixture. Since these fixtures will present an obvious visual even to the casual viewer, it is necessary to use the most decorative luminaires possible. The more sophisticated fixtures feature aluminum manufacture with a multitude of finish options to compliment the colors of the building. They also feature a variety of mounting options and triple axis directional control that allows them to be pointed in any direction.

Security Lighting Fixtures

In many cases, wall mounted lights play an important role in security lighting. This is particularly true in the industrial community, where buildings are very large and have several access points to the interior of the facility. Every one of these access points represents a point of vulnerability if it is obscured by shadows. Protecting these access points means making them clearly visible to either CCTV cameras or security personnel stationed in the facility. Wall mounted floodlights can be installed with remote sensors that trigger the lights when motion is detected. If the lights need to remain on throughout the night, there are a number of newer HID and fluorescent models to choose from that offer excellent lumens per watt efficiency. These newer lights work well with automatic timers that turn the lights on and off at certain hours.

When installing any kind of wall mounted lights, it is always best to have a photometric analysis of the building(s) performed first. This report will show where problem areas of shadow may potentially arise and help better determine the necessary lumens output and directional angles of incidence required to create the most evenly distributed and aesthetically balanced field of illumination.
